TCR’s Spring/Summer 2013 Picks – Part II

Let’s just call this Houston’s version of the Canadian Tuxedo.

With the summer heat in mind I opted for more lightweight pieces. First up, the Gant Rugger Indigo Hugger Original Button Down (that’s what HOBD stands for for those of y’all wondering). If y’all know me, you know I can’t turn down a great indigo dyed shirt. This Gant Rugger shirt is made from a loose woven oxford cotton which has been indigo overdyed and washed for a soft blue color and feel. Finished with a full button down collar, chest pocket and hanging loop this shirt, like your denim only get better with age as it begins to fade as you wear it. Although this is not the standard denim shirt that completes the aforementioned Canadian Tuxedo that we have all grown to love, this is a great alternative leading into the summer months. Next up are a pair of jeans I’ve had a hard time parting with. My APC New Standards have been in my denim rotation for over four years and are in severe need of repairs. What I love about APC is their minimalist approach (i.e. no leather patch) and although it’s not MADE IN ‘MERICA the 12.5 oz raw denim selvedge jeans have a modern fit that works well for my body type. The New Standards are essentially the brand’s most “standard” jean and fits regularly in both rise and waist. The jeans have a straight leg and taper slightly from the knee to hem. They can be worn baggy or tight depending on which size you go for (I sized down 1 size). Besides the fit, I’ve really enjoyed how the denim has faded over time. Like I’ve said before, I usually spend my summers sans socks and opted for more of a “classic” shoe in the New Balance 991. I don’t care what Ryan Gosling says, for the record I was never in a frat nor am I Steve Jobs (#duh), but I can certainly appreciate a classic shoe when I see one and like Steve Carrell said they offer a lot of support…if you must know. The 991′s are very versatile and a comfortable (not orthopedic lookin’)  pair of neutral shoes that looks better over time, especially when you beat them up.

Last, but certainly not the least, is our signature “Houston Cap”. We teamed up with Ebbets Field and Tanner Goods to create two exclusive versions of our popular Houston cap. I chose to rock the Red cap to brighten up the unit and give it some pop. This cap did just the trick. The cap comes with a wool crown produced by Ebbets and an adjustable cognac strap with our motto “Stay Classy” etched into it complete with brass hardware and cognac colored leather headband produced by Tanner Goods.  This was the first time Ebbets Field and Tanner Goods worked together to create a hat and we were very excited to be the first store to carry a collaborative product involving these two well-respected brands.

Be on the look out for more of my picks as we dive into the summer months. Till next time!

Stay Classy

TCR’s Spring/Summer 2013 Picks – Part I

Let me just say that I have a lot more respect for people who model for a living because being comfortable in front of a camera isn’t easy by any means. Having said that allow me to introduce you to a first installment of series of photos entitled TCR’s Picks where we highlight some of the products we are excited about from season to season and that you may have seen in person, but aren’t exactly sure how to put together.

Season after season, Our Legacy continues to come correct. One of my favorite pieces from the Spring/Summer 2013 Collection is the First Shirt Amazonas. Made in Portugal from an Indian-cotton linen blend, this shirt may arguably be your go to shirt for the summer since it’s lightweight and breathable but more importantly one of the better print shirts I’ve seen in a while. With prints still in heavy rotation this season The Amazon Print will help you make a bold statement.

If you’re going to go with a bold top, I highly suggest that the rest of your outfit is subtle so you don’t take away from the print. I elected to go with Rogue Territory Black Stantons. Before you start harping on me for wearing black in the hotter seasons hear me out. At this time you’re probably still trying to break in your raw denim so you can get the honeycombs you want by Fall…am I right? Well to add some variety to your wardrobe why not opt for some Black Stantons. Made in Los Angeles from Japanese Denim from Kaihara Mills, the Black Stantons are slightly lighter than your typical raw denim at 13oz. and are sanforized which if you don’t already know, you can google it here. The pants are mid-rise which I really like because I typically don’t wear pants below my waist (different strokes for different folks) but in my opinion, mid-rise is a happy median. Since summer is literally around the corner for us I also opted for a subtle shoe in the Nike Free Woven NRG. I’ve been wearing these shoes for a while now and love them. The 3.0 sole is definitely comfortable and the woven upper is very breathable especially since I typically don’t wear socks in the summer. An added bonus to the shoes is it brings some sort of texture to the outfit whereas it doesn’t look like you are wearing a black onesie from the waist down and gives the outfit and eyes some contrast in texture from the pants to the shoes.

Be on the lookout for more of our picks for the season and if you have an questions feel free to email us info@theclassroomshop.com or stop on by at our physical location located across the street from La Madeleine at 2534 Amherst St. Houston, TX 77005.

REVIEW | PF Flyers Center Hi “Sandlot”

The definition of a…

classic \ˈkla-sik\
adj.
1. Judged over a period of time to be of the highest quality and outstanding of its kind.

noun.
1. A work of art of recognized and established value.

Are you looking to run faster, jump higher, or escape a so-called St. Bernard by the name of Hercules? Then the PF Flyers Center Hi “Sandlot” shoes are the shoe for you. Forever immortalized as the only way Benny “The Jet” Rodriguez could escape Hercules in the movie “The Sandlot,” these all black PF Flyers are a certified classic. The Center Hi is a canvas upper, vertically ribbed toe guard, diamond patterned outsole, PF “railroad” heel webbing, and the classic logo on the ankle.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, pictures nor words can describe how great these shoes look and how comfortable they feel when you put them on. Don’t take my word for it, try them on at our Pop-Up Shop Saturday, February 16th, as well as meet Ougi and Alayasha Owerka-Moore, the PF Ambassadors.

Origin & History
PF stands for Posture Foundation. Developed in 1933, this patented insole technology set a new standard in sneaker comfort. The insole technology was first used in BF Goodrich shoes. It involves a wedge-like insert (promoted as the “magic wedge”) that moves weight to the outside of the foot, evenly distributing weight, reducing leg strain. As the success of the sneakers with the Posture Foundation insole technology grew in 1937 it became the basis for the brand name, “PF Flyers.” In the 1930s and early 1940s PF Flyers was making sneakers, as well as oxfords, boots and heels. Sport styles by PF were very popular in the 1950s, renowned for helping you “run faster and jump higher” courtesy of the “action wedge.” This ability would be a result of the improved fit of the foundation, but similar foundations were finding their way into competing brands, countering the PF advantage.
PF Flyers had the first collaboration between a sneaker company and pro athlete in the 1950s, when they teamed up with Bob Cousy, the famed Boston Celtics star to create a string of classic basketball designs.

By the 1960s, PF Flyers was one of the largest sneaker brands in America. In 1964, Hanna-Barbera’s Jonny Quest was featured in a custom-animated 60-second commercial for the brand that ran during the Jonny Quest series, which featured a “magic ring” as a promotional offer. The ring featured a movable code wheel, magnifying lens, signal flasher and a secret compartment. The code was implemented by a rotating circular inner code dial marked “ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ” and a fixed outer code marked “WEARPFSLQMYBUHXVCZNDKIOTGJ”. The ring was available, free, from shoe stores which carried PF Flyers.

Shoe retailers also distributed free comic books, illustrating adventures centered on young heroes whose PF Flyers enabled them to overcome danger. These books were tied to the concurrent TV ad campaign, which ran on Saturday mornings.
In the early 1970s, magician Harry Blackstone, Jr. promoted a “PF Magic Wedge Kit” giveaway offer with the purchase of PF Flyers on a television commercial.
With the brand’s increasing popularity, women were able to buy dresses made to match their PFs, and PF was standard issue in the US Army.

PF Flyers were featured prominently in the 1993 film The Sandlot. Towards the end of the film, the character Benny (Mike Vitar) wears an all-black pair of Center Hi’s – the narration tells us they are “guaranteed to make a kid run faster and jump higher.” The style is now available under the designation, Center Hi Sandlot Edition.
